Noah, Mordecai Manuel
(1785-1851)
   American newspaper editor, politician and playwright. He was born in Philadelphia and started his career as a clerk to the US Treasury. In 1809 he went to Charleston, South Carolina, where he edited the City Gazette. Later he became the editor of the National Advocate in New York and established the New York Enquirer. In 1841 he became a judge of the Court of Sessions. He was active in the congregations of Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia and Shearith Israel in New York. In 1825 he helped to purchase land on Grand Island near Buffalo, New York, which he planned to develop as a Jewish colony. After the failure of this project, he became an advocate of Palestine as a national home for the Jews.
